Back around 1970 or 71, my dad was teaching a Philosophy class to some middle-schoolers at an alternative school he helped found. My elementary-aged self was tagging along that day for some reason. He took the class outside to a grassy space in the sun (I think we actually had to drive there), and I listened while they sat in a circle and he led them through thought problems. I learned about Zenos Dichotomy Paradox. Yesterday, I took my MLC middle school Environmental Thought elective outside to the adjacent park, and we sat in a circle in the sun while I told them what I could about human ecology and why sewers provide a kind of ecosystem service for us, just as wetlands provide flood control for rivers. Younger kids ran in and out of the playground behind us. There are plenty of pairs of my dads shoes Id never want to wear (and many I never could), but that pair was all right.
