Back before the reformation came to Ireland the Irish system was such that there were small monasteries scattered about the island well within walking distance to just about anywhere. many of these monasteries held lands given to them by the landed. Celts held land in common then. On these lands there were small cottages and there was work. The system was such that the indigent could come and live there and work and receive a portion of his or her work in money so that they could buy a boat and nets or tools or whatever they needed to work. The people rich or poor were offered a good level of medical help and they were taught to read and to do arithmetic etc. One has to remember that when the barbarians attacked the empire there was a flood of books of all sorts from Archimedes to Cicero and Galen and The writtings od St. John. Everything showed up in Ireland. Irish being who they are took to those beehive huts and copied books by hand. Ireland had an abundance of fishermen and farmers that could read and write in Latin and Greek and Hebrew etc. They didnt need Obamacare. The medical knowledge of the day was available there and the academic knowledge of the day was available there from religious who were passionate about serving their brothers and sisters in poverty and humility.
