Back from Juvenile Court in Media – for the hearing of the kid - TopicsExpress

Back from Juvenile Court in Media – for the hearing of the kid around the corner who stole my GPS from my car. Very big THANK YOU to Master Robert Curran! He gave a very powerful, moving lecture to the defendant that moved me to tears! Master Curran told the defendant that he grew up in the “country” – Upper Providence…but had many friends here in Darby. He told him that he used to come down and hang out here with his friends – play basketball, visit, shop and just have fun. He said he loved it down here as well as his friends because it was a safe, clean, blue collar working town where everyone got along, took care of their properties and looked out for each other. But he then said his friends all moved away because the town changed. Crime had risen, trash and debris were all around, no one took care of their properties etc. and how they are too hurt to even come back here to see how much the town has changed. He then told him that he took a ride through Darby the other day and he was very sad at what he saw. It reminded him of a war torn country with trash and debris, abandoned houses and businesses etc. He then asked the defendant where he was born – he answered “Liberia”. So Master Curran then told the defendant that obviously, his parents or someone cared about him enough to get him out of Liberia where a Revolution was taking place – and brought him to this country so he could live safely and have better opportunities….and he abused that privilege by hurting his neighbors – robbing, stealing, fighting….such a very powerful story he told to this kid that I hope it sank in. He did it so well, I wish he would come down here and speak to the whole town! Might motivate some to clean up, straighten up and start respecting each other! What a terrific Master! He didn’t have to take the time to talk to this kid…especially because of the huge backlog in cases….but he did. And he went above and beyond with the sentence! 56 hours community service for simple assault, 40 hours community service for theft from a motor vehicle AND imposed restitution AND a “be in the house before dark” curfew!!! Great job Master Curran!
