Back from seeing “Into the Woods” at the local cinema. I will - TopicsExpress

Back from seeing “Into the Woods” at the local cinema. I will say this is an ambitious film with most of Sondheim’s music intact. Everyone has a good voice in this musical fairy tale especially James Corden and Emily Blunt as the baker and his wife. They are not just adorable in their desire to reverse the witch’s curse but they have impressive vocal cords I particularly liked the two youngsters Lilla Crawford as Red Riding Hood and David Huttlestone as the impetuous Jack. Both had sharp voices and handle the Sondheim’s lyrics skillfully Johnny Depp had a brief cameo as the Big Bad Wolf. I liked when particularly asked little Red Riding Hood “What’s in your basket” with a leering look in his eye. Oh yes Meryl Streep was in the movie wasnt she. She looked like she was having a blast as the singing witch. She was great belting out show tunes in a fright wig and crone’s putty nose. Her take on “The Last Midnight” was highly dramatic. Chris Pine camp it up as the prince. He looked like he just waltzed in from a Siegfried and Roy tribute act. It looks like his character was from another film. The look of the film had a look of fizzy, fairy-dust energy. I was really not that happy with this look maybe because where I saw it at the Presidio it was digital. It might have looked better on film. (Frankly I am not all that happy with the digital process and would rather see a flick on film). The film was great for about two thirds but then it loses its magic and momentum and sagged. This happened after the bakers couple scavenger hunt was over and the rampaging giant appears. I thought when I saw the giant she sure looked familiar. I had to stay for the credits and found out it was my friend Francis de la Tour and there was a brief appearance at the end from another person I know Simon Russell Beale in a cameo with James Corden.
