Back from the canoe trip in Canada and recharged to finish the remaining four weeks of the 2014 Season. Attached are a few photos from the trip that I and a few friends have been doing for 14-15 years or so. This year was an ‘easier’ trip although we still put some distance on the canoe. Quetico Provincial Park is an enormous area with many many lakes. And many portages. Some lakes are very large and can take a day to paddle. Some portages are several miles long. But we chose a route that had shorter portages and offered an ‘easy-out’ in case the weather turned dangerous. It’s a true wilderness experience with no cellphone reception, little human activity/interaction, and water that comes straight out of the lakes ready to drink without treatment. You are really ‘out there’. It isn’t a ‘fishing trip’ per se but there is a lot of fishing that is done. Fishing was slower this year. I didn’t catch a ton of fish but had a few nice northern pike. A friend in the canoe had some good lake trout. The lake trout look different up in those waters and are much darker in color than those we catch on Lake Michigan. A few pic descriptions: the chipmunk/ground squirrel was a resident at one of our campsights, very tame and probably used to getting handouts from other campers. It hopped up on my leg one morning as I was having coffee and oatmeal. The moon was very full and bright. Then the rains, wind, and colder temps came and made for some unpleasant hours and days. Our tents remained dry inside and we were successful at starting a big fire shortly after it had rained all day; the key ingredients were white pine needles and birch bark with a healthy quantity of cedar ‘leaves’ that serve to ignite quickly and elevate the fire temperature to dry out standby wood. The fire warmed us up and is always a healthy mood enhancer. Not much big wildlife; no moose, deer, mountain lions, wolves or bear. But plenty of loons and eagles. I start back on the water again on Wednesday but have a full cord of firewood to stack before that.
