Back home in Ann Arbor with lots of new ideas, renewed inspiration, and plenty to ponder. ASTA admins and conference leadership, THANK YOU for providing us with a place to share ideas, watch inspirational performances, network and make new friends while connecting with old ones, and helping remind us why we do what we do every day. There are many highlights, but here is my short list: -- Keynote addresses by Doris Gazda and Bob Culver -- Watching Gary Lewis rehearse Shostakovich 5 -- The My Passion in String Teaching roundtable -- Watching Rebecca Hunter , Judy Palac, and Jennifer Johnsons session on body mapping -- Re-connecting with several of my life mentors (who probably dont even know how much their advice, friendship and support means to me), including Bob-Pam Phillips, Andy Dabczynski, Scott Laird, Michael Hopkins, Robert Gardner, Gail Van Aernum Barnes, Dan Scott, Valerie Palmieri, Gabriel Villasurda, Kirk Moss, and so many more. -- Discovering the $5 sight-reading bin in the exhibit hall! -- The making guitar class fun! session -- Networking with the student chapters from MSU, UM and IU! (the future is indeed bright!) -- The multiple discussions I had with people about the right hand and how the bow hand affects intonation! -- Seeing my brother, dear friend, and colleague in musical crime and passion Soo Han, and getting to know his co-teachers better, including Maggie Hite! -- I met Brenda Brenner in person! Finally! What an amazing person! -- I met composer Richard Meyer! -- Getting to know Jed Fritzemeier better. What an awesome guy! -- Seeing the wonderful people at Shar music, who make me feel at home. -- Watching Jonathan Richard Handmans group ROCK the NOF concert, but just as importantly, seeing so many young people in the audience enjoying a polished musical product that contains depth and artistry. -- 60 degree weather! This week, I listen to over 140 auditions and re-auditions for Pioneer Orchestras 2014-2015. Though the week is exhausting, I am really looking forward to being back in the trenches, where I belong. Not sure if I will be in Salt Lake City for ASTA 2015, but who knows what the future will bring. One (half or whole) step at a time. All for now. Good night!
