Back in 1995, I prepared a list of the most instantly recognizable - TopicsExpress

Back in 1995, I prepared a list of the most instantly recognizable literary characters of the 20th Century. The defining criterion was that each character should be known to EVERYBODY, even if folk had never read any of the original stories. My list included (in no particular order of importance) James Bond (created by Ian Fleming) Tarzan (created by Edgar Rice Burroughs) Fu Manchu (created by Sax Rohmer) Miss Marple (created by Agatha Christie) Zorro (created by Johnston McCulley) Simon Templar, The Saint (created by Leslie Charteris) Billy Bunter (created by Charles Hamilton, writing as Frank Richards) What other characters should be on this list, keeping in mind the defining criterion? This is restricted to literary characters; if I had included the visual media, then Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Phantom, Flash Gordon et al would certainly appear.....
