Back in 1999 or thereabout, transparency International branded - TopicsExpress

Back in 1999 or thereabout, transparency International branded Nigeria as No! on the list of countries that are not transparent in all aspects of its daily life. NASS and the Senate refuted that claim and even the common illitrates joined that chorus that that organization was not fair to the image of the country. Each time I read the Nigerian daily news, one would want to believe that Transparency International was absolutely correct. Our problem started from the second republic when shagari and his NPN embarked on wholesome riping the econmomy apart and we staarted the era of "Bi oba, opa, bi oba, o bulese". Now I say this without any fear of contradition that we now have a generation of "Barawos". Judging from the events of recent years, "|Barawoism" has become a cancerous worm eating deep into the fabrics of our society. There is no honor, self control and we all become our biggest problms and you often hear people say "becaue everybody does it, it is ok for me to follow such a reckless step. How else will you explain a situation where a chief executive of a publicly owned banking institution, using funds from the bank to either buy shares in other public companies or strings of proerties on the streets of Dubai and such officer still believes he has done nothing wrong? or pr a permanent secretary celebrating a wedding party for his daughter in Dubai, or a state governor using funds from state parastals to fund his reelection or better still building mega schools in certain parts of the state and leaving out the region of the state where majority of the state,s revenue comes from is left without any single notable project? every unemployed graduate now wants to be governor of his state because he believes there he would make quick money, watch that bank employee that never made a 2.5GPA, now owning a block of 6 flats in Lekki extension, what happened to those backlog of cases from EFCC over these years, why are those culrits not in jail? why have,nt we been able to arrest the killers of our late AG,Chief Bola Ige? when was the last time any public company or government establishment accounts audited either by the various internal Audit department or the Federal Audit? what happened to those abandoned road projects we spent billion naira, have we been able to bring anybody to book? we cannot because we are all "barawos". This coutry is sinking deep in a slew of corruption. Who shall we report to when the heavens are corrupt. The federal government tells us everyday that we are stupid to our face and we become so helpless that we just sigh and moan without any hope of salvation. Barawoism has come to stay in our midst. Ati foje sowo omo babalorisha, oku enti o ma bo lorun owo omo ni. Pardon me, I no sabi turanchi. Iwa ibaje ko dara.
