Back in 2009, we wrote a piece on TOC which highlighted how the reports in the Straits Times of May 1987, during the Marxist conspiracy arrests, carried no bylines. The reports had no reporters names attached to them. See here: theonlinecitizen/2009/05/straits-times-of-may-87-four-days-of-government-statements-on-marxist-conspiracy/ Now, Bertha Henson, who was with the ST then, confirms that journalists twiddled their thumbs because an editorial decision had been made to simply run material from the Internal Security Department in full. We were not to ask questions of anyone nor can we do what we usually do with verbose reports – write it journalistically. In his 2012 book, OB Markers, former editor-in-chief of the Straits Times, Cheong Yip Seng, did not mention the Marxist conspiracy at all. Not a single word. Now we know why. Sigh.
