Back in Aug I wrote to Steven Harper about this disaster: Mr. Harper, I am sure you have seen the footage of the tails pond breach here in BC that happened almost 2 weeks ago. It would be nice if you would say something about this-provincial government has said it is NOT an environmental disaster-but we here in BC think differently. Tell that to the the bears, deer, birds, etc that have made their way back to their creek for a drinks of water and it looks like a moonscape! Government didnt do their job correctly -the warning signs were there, people that work there know-it was only a matter of time before the breach happened! The environment matters!!!! not the shareholders pockets! https://youtube/watch?v=NpZOLkIaOnY please help! make sure this doesnt happen again! this is madness!!! This is the letter I got back from the Environment Minister today! Dear Ms. Hollingsworth: The Office of the Prime Minister has forwarded to me your email message of August 18, 2014, concerning the Mount Polley mine incident in British Columbia. I regret the delay in responding . Our government is also concerned about this issue. I would like to reassure you that federal and provincial experts are working to address the situation in a safe, efficient, and responsible manner. In the event of such an environmental emergency, Environment Canadas key role is to provide support and consolidated expert environmental advice on an as-requested basis to the lead response agencies through its National Environmental Emergencies Centre. In this case, these agencies are the British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Environment and the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines and Responsible for Core Review. In addition, Environment Canadas warning preparedness meteorologists are providing weekly weather briefings to Emergency Management BC, and the Pacific Storm Prediction Centre has produced site-specific forecasts to facilitate the work of on-site responders. Environment Canada will continue to engage with Emergency Management BC and provide its expertise as needed. Environment Canada is currently assessing the Mount Polley incident with respect to federal environmental laws within its jurisdiction, including the pollution prevention provisions of the Fisheries Act. The Department has opened an investigation and is working jointly with the BC Ministry of Environment Major Investigations Unit. Environment Canada takes its enforcement role very seriously and if a violation is found , enforcement action will be taken in accordance with the Compliance and Enforcement Policy for the Habitat Protection and Pollution Prevention Provisions of the Fisheries Act. I appreciate having had this opportunity to respond to your concerns. Please accept my best wishes.
