Back in January, my ex-girlfriend was assaulted by her ex-boyfriend. He threw a full, open can of soda out of his truck window and it struck her in the face, tearing open the skin below her nose. Then, he fled. I saw it happen. I was 30 yards down the street looking for her dog that got out during the initial altercation. The cops were called and a report was filed. The next day, we went to the county courthouse and got an arrest warrant issued. The charge was one of domestic assault. After months of continuances, the trial was this morning. He was found innocent of the sole charge of domestic assault (which should have been just assault). Im so incredibly angry and disappointed right now that Im not sure what to do. I feel numb. My friend was assaulted and humiliated and there was no justice. Apparently, in cook county, you can lob a projectile from your automobile causing bodily harm (she still has a scar above her upper lip) and GET AWAY WITH IT! It became clear to me today just how f#$%ed up the system is. Now this arrogant douchebag with violent tendencies toward women gets to strut out of the courtroom (whistling, I might add). It isnt right.
