Back in October 2013 a little competition started by Chorus called Gigatown. A hashtag war between New Zealand towns to compete for the fastest internet in the South Hemisphere at a discounted rate, a $200,000 development fund and the title of “Gigatown” Here we are nearly a year on, with only 2 weeks left before the top 5 towns are announced as finalists and Timaru is in a prime spot to go through not only to the finals but to win this. Who would have thought? Well, we did! But more importantly YOU DID and for that we are incredibly grateful, thankful and immensely proud to be leading the charge for #gigatowntimaru. When this journey started for us we were in 11th place, our southern neighbours Oamaru were in first place, without your support we would likely still be sitting there. We never started this to make a great community we knew Timaru was a great community and with that we knew it was only a matter of time before we would start climbing the leaderboard and Timaru rised up to that challenge – we currently sit in first. No doubt anyone reading this heard at least once “How will you ever beat Wanaka?” or “Wanakas too far ahead” Guess what? You believed, You didn’t give up and You did it. This has been a long competition, the longest any of us behind the scenes have ever worked on and we all agree on one thing – You kept us going, your comments of support, Your passion, Your love of Timarus new icon “Hashy” and Your belief that all of us together can transform Timaru. Faster and cheaper internet will not just improve our own personal lives it will bring limitless opportunities to Timaru. We have all gotten this far, with only 10 days left we all need to dig deep to make sure we fly into the finals faster than Gigabit fibre, head to gigatown.co.nz join up if you haven’t and select Timaru to be the Gigatown and complete the final quiz. The journey so far has been incredible and we promise you that the journey we take you all on for the finals will be the most memorable thing to ever happen to Timaru.
