Back in my college days, i had a friend who had escaped the regime in Poland , marred an American and was avid in her support of her new adopted home. One day out of the blue, she asked me if i wanted to hear a good Polish joke. I admit, i was fairly embarrased, as you know the state of Polish jokes, and not wanting to be insensitive, i was ready to turn the subject. No, she said, laughing...this is one we Poles tell among ourselves... Seems like Mietek, a large but inoffensive fellow, had made a name for himself as an exceptional worker in both factory and field. Enough for the local commissar to sing his praises up the political ladder all the way to Warsaw. In any case, the Party deemed it propaganda enough to send a bigwig to honor Mietek and hold him up as a prime example to the masses. The sacred day arrived and so did the bigwig. He gloated over the fecundity of the workers fields and other possessions. Of course, while inspirational, that Mietek was able to prosper well despite the shared responsibility of the system, was a grave nono. This said bigwig was encouraged to rectify. gospodeen ( citizen) Mietek, your efforts are extremely commendable, but you realize that not all are as fortunate as you. Hence, you must share your good fortune. Expecting resistance, bigwig was astounded by Mieteks replies. of course, comrade You would give up these fertile fields ? Da, comrade official. You would give up your house, though modest for the city was substantial for this rural district. Da, comrade. Suffused with emotion ( though one could not but recognize the greed), bigwig looked for more and spotted a lone pig by the house. And would you give up that pig for the benefit of the people and party. Nyet. Increduously, bigwig lookedat Mietek, stunned by this refusal. You gave up your fields and you gave up your house. Why do you not give up the pig ? Mietek grinned . The pig I own. I have to admit, i did laugh heartedly. Lesson learned. :)
