Red Foley, the host, was a hopeless drunk and often wasnt sober enough to host the show, so various scheduled guests would be cast into the limelight to fill in for Foley. Often times, Foley was no where to be found and they would have search parties out looking for the AWOL host. I interviewed to producer of the program years ago and he passed many stories along pertaining to their hunt for a host. The results were some little people in show business were catapulted to stardom and the rest is history.
