Back in the 60’s (and before) athletes were discouraged from drinking water during practice thinking it would weigh them down and make them mentally soft. And water stations weren’t part of marathons. My how things have changed. With experimentation, science and research we have learned that not only water but also electrolytes, and sometimes carbs, are needed for maintaining and enhancing an athletes performance. What surprises me though is how many baseless, hyped, nonsensical and sometimes downright dangerous beliefs still exist in health and athletics, in spite of all we know. That’s why I make it a point to listen to everything but believe nothing until I can verify with reason and multiple sources a claim being made. How do you decide what to believe?
