Back in the C13th, in Spain, there was a very great king who was a great patron of the arts called Alfonso X el Sabio (Alfonso the Wise). He was deeply involved in art, music and science, and his court was a place of great culture and learning filled with Muslims, Christians and Jews. He is responsible for over 400 gorgeous songs, which I am very fond of, called The Cantigas de Santa Maria. They are a collection of songs about the Virgin Mary and the miracles she was supposed to have performed. The songs are about Mary as the Goddess, and the songs are like folk stories - not drab high religion. This is a film about Alfonso and his legacy, art and music. He was influential in many ways, for example the legal system he established is still in use in several American states today. The whole film is full of the amazing illustrations from his books and the music is from the books too. He was a giant of a king. https://vimeo/86201412
