Back in the day on this day, being the day before Easter, my brothers & I along with the rest of the boys in the West End would pile in the back room of Mr. Gaines (father of Rev. Ralph Elwyn Gaines) on Pines (between 17th & 18th) and get our Easter haircut. Haircuts were 30 cents and we had the nerve to complain when they went up to 35 cents, until Mr. Gaines explain how much it cost to sharpen his blades after cutting our nappy heads. That night the smell of Momma and my sisters getting their hair together via a hot straightening comb. Come Easter morning, our heads were neat, and our clothes were CLEAN!!! Yes, we were dressed to impress. First Baptist Highland Park always had a packed Sunday School & Morning Service and later in the evening we gathered to say our Easter Speech. Those were the days.
