Back in the day, when a comic/magazine on the rack has passed its shelf life, the retailer would cut out a section of the cover, normally the masthead or title area, and return the copy to their distributors or publishers for credit. These remaindered copies would then be destroyed, or for some, the inner pages would be salvaged and compiled with other issues to become volumes. To many collectors, these copies have zero or little value, but I have a soft spot for them. Somehow, in between the time the retailers sent back this book to their distributors, some guy must have felt what a shame to have this thing destroyed, even in its mutilated state, and decided to save it, and many years later, to have it in my hands. Although Ive known about remaindered copies for a long time, Ive never seen a key book in this condition. To think that what we would pay hundreds for now, was once expiring its shelf time and had been marked to be destroyed.
