Back in the day, women wore aprons to protect their clothing from splashes and smudges. My mother wore an apron when she cooked; Aunt Rose wore hers, one that resembled a sleeveless tunic, all day long; and I wore one while helping in the kitchen. In fact, my first sewing project for Home Ec was a red-and-white checked apron, which I still have. Lynda Hojnacki, I think I have yours, too, an orange one with yellow ric-rac?)
