Back in the day you hand to earn respect when it came to deejaying. Currently due to the help of technology and societies lowering of the bar, too many people think just because they have a laptop, gear and downloaded tracks, they are equal to a good dj. WRONG! Old School Standards: 1. Skills - mixing scratching juggling must be IN TIME, AT THE RIGHT TIME and done RIGHT!!! Some of us used to bring tape deck and 4 track recorders to use along side out decks. Today we have the technology to remix on the fly. So why are we just blending 2 songs together??? 2. Read the crowd - back in the day the clubs didnt want to hear every radio song. They went by the feeling and welcomed new music because it created a new feeling!!! We played many genres not just current hits. People were open the TRUSTING THE DJ. Only the good djs new how to work the music new and old to reach the crowd. 3. Loyalty - we didnt need stripper poles and fire breathers nor did we need gimmicks like expensive light shows and theatrics to entertain the crowds. Back then people would find their favorite dj who played music in such a way that is touched them. They could go on a journey dancing and feeling all night. We didnt have 5 djs playing the same set all night. The crowd trusted the DJ to doors than play the top tracks of the day. 4. Paid in full - the djs who could use skills music ability to read crowds and be the best were paid well. Unlike today where you can go bar hopping and hear the same songs in every spot. Back to back boring hit mixes that might as well be pre-recorded oops some are :( I have turned down so many gigs because of what the promoter or manager was paying the djs. I guess u get what you pay for. Lower the bar so anyone can be a dj why pay more? But then look at the crowds and the vibe as the results of this mentality. I guess when you arent in it for the music you ruin what we love and turn it into something that has nothing to do with the original DJ!!! Just a few last thoughts... Djs when you play in a club an event or anywhere they are supposed to DANCE. Please make them DANCE!!! Facing forward fist pumping or taking selfies with your drink is NOT DANCING!!! Djs please dont scratch all night long save it for the battle not the dance floor. Wannabe edm *i wont use the word House Music here that would be wrong :/ djs stop downloading to top 100 hardest tracks you can find and banging em so hard theres nothing left. Especially at the beginning of the night. I know its hard to understand what Im talking about if you are part of the image me generation. But in all honesty YOUR IMAGE DOES NOT MAKE YOU A GOOD DJ!!!
