Back in the mid 1960s I was working as a programmer (FORTRAN mostly) at the UC Berkeley Survey Research Center, when a friend there introduced me to Shannon and Weavers book The Mathematical Theory of Communication. The book is a serious slog, but still worth the trouble and will give you a great understanding of where most of the concepts that we seem to now take for granted in information theory (signal to noise ratio, feedback cycles, etc.) became so clearly presented. After all these years, still worth finding and reading - highly recommended and will definitely take your mind off Iraq and the name of the Washington football club.
