Back in the seventies there were still WWII Vets in the military. A few nurses transferred over to the Air Force from the US Army. If your shit wasnt falling off you just didnt expect any mercy from those WWII and Korean veteran nurses. After what they saw men go through in two real world shootouts between various nations, they expected men to man-up. No mercy. If I saw a woman nurse over forty-I avoided those older sawbones. Hell, when youre nineteen forty looked old. Forty looks good today. Forty is the old twenty. I was living in downtown Koza, Okinawa, a few blocks outside of Kadena, AB, near the National Police station. We would play hard sometimes and I would get bruised up and sore. A few times I worried about my having received a serious fracture. Martial Arts was different back then. We did light contact and light contact meant that if you got knocked down on your ass, but nothing was actually broken...well...that was the definition of light contact. Hard kicks and punches were slightly pulled. Busted lip? Normal. Air knocked out of you? Normal. Puked? Unacceptable. Abdominal hits were handled. We took some hard hits every now and then-it came with the territory. You got a few knee shots every now and then and this was every players real worry. More men have been sidelined in martial arts from knee injuries than from any other injury. Ive felt my knee do shit when kicked that I know a knee just wasnt made to do, but it worked out OK in the end. Im talking about training hard. Now days my training is pretty low key. Craziness is a thing of the past. I figure that Ive used up all my training luck years ago. But this doesnt mean that we cant teach realistically without pain and not get the message across. You have to set up the proper scenarios. Put them into a groove and then push them. Everybody knows whats coming and usually nobody gets hurt. Set a scenario and then let the trainees glide through the expected technique. My scenarios are very general. I dont teach actual techniques, but concepts. You find yourself in a given situation: What do you do? I teach two sides. The weak areas on either side of your planted feet. I train to stay outside of the opponents lead foot. I try to diminish power by superior positioning and hopefully all of this lessens an opponents ability to create havoc on your person, by defending yourself with these zone defenses. Sometimes one small body shift, or even a half step one way or another can get you out of trouble. In the end to me its about good body positioning. No matter what you do you should be out of reach of a blade as much as possible. Footwork. I think that Ill put a tattoo of a foot on my ass. Maybe even use my womans exact foot for the tattoo. Just a reminder for me to keep moving my ass.
