Back in the summer, our friend Owen brought us a sack of peaches. The peaches were huge -- but extremely sweet. Later, I asked him where hed gotten them. Hed gotten them out of his yard. Owens kids had planted peach pits, and 2 to 3 years later, he had peach trees -- and awesome peaches. I was pretty stunned. Joe went to see Becky -- the same Becky that managed A & A orchards for decades -- and Joe learned the following. Yes, in fact you can grow lots of peaches from seed. These are true trees. Most often orchards have trees which are root stock with grafted peach varieties on them. Grafted trees can be sprayed with pesticides, true trees cannot. Old fashioned, seed grown trees have a different root structure -- and cannot tolerate the chemicals. Apricots also can be grown from seed. According to Owen, direct seeded peaches do best planted in November. Or you can seed them in pots in the spring, and transplant the young tree in the garden when its nice and warm. Big hole, plenty of water. Owen told us to simply find a peach we liked, save the pit, allow it to dry for at least a week or two -- and stick it in the ground. Were giving this a shot!!!
