Back to Basics . . . Why do we need plants. Talk about basics . . . this is where it starts. If it weren’t for green plant life on this planet, our life as human beings as well as all other animal life could not exist. The atmosphere surrounding earth consists of about 20% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and about 2% carbon dioxide and traces of a variety of other gases. All life on earth needs oxygen to exist. Animal life forms breathe oxygen and release carbon dioxide as a waste product into the air. Plants also “breathe” oxygen and release carbon dioxide as a waste product. However, the one unique characteristic of green plant life is, that it also, under certain conditions, absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and uses it to manufacture oxygen. The process in which this occurs is called photosynthesis.
