Back to the 80s! Motion Device, out of Canada, covers a lot of metal and has a few of their own songs, is trying to keep rock alive. Musically I think theyre perfect, but as they go along they seem to be overshadowing the music by mixing lead singer Sara over everything- the novelty of the band being that she started singing at 9, and that seems to be what theyre trying to sell. Sure, sometimes metal focuses on the antics of the lead singer, but to me its always been the combination of all of it- the vocal gymnastics, the rhythm guitar, the steady bass line, and sometimes even the lyrics. Metal is a feeling, that growl that starts way down low in your soul and rises up to become a scream of defiance to the world, and its not defined by one thing- think of Deep Purples Smoke on the Water- what grabs you about it? The bass and rhythm together. The guitar is instantly recognizable, but when the bass comes in thats when it takes off, and thats when that scream starts to build. Same thing with Ted Nugents Cat Scratch Fever- that opening riff, then the bass and drums, and rounds out with his screeched vocals- theres just no sitting still when that happens. True, honest, grass roots metal to me is not blinding fast (I call that machine gun metal) or the growled vocals so distorted theyre impossible to understand (the lyrics are important- The Mob Rules actually tells a story) nor is it half the stuff that came out in the 80s when the world discovered metal and the popularity caused it to become Glam, or Hair, Metal (think Motley Crue, Poison, L.A. Guns.) The epitome of this foolishness was when Bon Jovi was termed a heavy metal act in the 90s by MTV. Most of those bands have dropped off the radar or gone back to their pop roots, but we true metal fans still have our Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, Nugent, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, and even way back to The Troggs and Blue Cheer. Metal Forever, Ill shut up now. \m/ \m/. And the Horns are supposed to be done with both hands or just the left, signifying the Left Hand Path of metal, in defiance of accepted society. Just so you know and dont look like an 80s wannabee. And now Ill really shut up.
