Back to the band discussion ---- I played in the band for 8 years , from the 5th grade till I was a Sr. Yes and played football and Track , the issue then was when I joined the question was from my parents was if you join the band are you going to STICK with it? Instruments cost money , well I went over to the old band room and told Mr B M Cherry I wanted to be in the band , and as comical as he was he ask me WHAT CAN YOU PLAY , I TOLD HIM I WAS IN THE RYTHYM BAND AT SCHOOL :):):) , he looked around AND next to the base drum was a pair of cymbals . So that was my first instrument , the next year I became the Base drummer , then later I learned to play the base horn or TUBA , FOOTBALL GAMES , TRIPS TO THE PEANUT FESTIVAL FOR 8 years , Mardi Gras in Mobile , Governor inaugurations , pep rallys , jam sessions , homecoming parades . Going places on the bus was fun , Christmas parades in OZARK , and speaking of that OZARK , ENTERPRISE , DOTHAN HIGH , had great bands then too but for the size of our school we could hang in there with the best of them , community support was a big key for that period of time , no cell phones , computers , video games . When my son David Holman joined the band , Sara and I helped out by getting Our concession stand moved and created some monies from the sale of hot dogs , cokes , popcorn , candy , the first year over $32,000 was cleared from the hard work the band boosters and football parents donated their time to raise , Now in Oklahoma I have 2 grand Children , CRAIG and Kathryn Holman play in , at one time that band was the #1 high school band in the nation , Has preformed in the ROSE BOWL PARADE and this year traveled to Ireland for the St Patricks Day parade . My point is the band is a very important character builder for our children , and its up to us to encourage our children to be in the band , if they are not evolved with sports , or something productive , oh and by the way , I found out the better students are the ones that make great band members , by learning to read music and work their brain a little , but the rewards from band will never leave you in your lifetime :) GO HEADLAND MARCHING BAND ! A football game without a band is a stick in the MUD !!!!
