Back years ago I came up with the concept of participation theatre...the general concept was that at two or three critical junctures in the movie, there would be a pause, and the audience would be promoted to select a button from the console in front of them either A, B, or C... which would be one of three possible twists the plot course could take. Whichever selection the audience chose would determine the next film segment they saw, until the next juncture...where more divergences could be chosen. Yes, it would require more production costs, but one would never be sure exactly what the resulting movie would be like, nor would viewers be prone to watching it just once. Now, whenI had this radical idea, I just knew that I would forget it, as I was in the middle of watching a movie at a theatre right then myself...so when I got out to my car, I took my index finger, kicked it, and wrote across the inside of the windscreen in big letters participation theatre. And yes, I totally forgot all about it for a few months...until winter came. On the first cold winter morning I got into the car, cranked it up, and before there was any heat my respiration fogged up the windscreen, and there before me appeared the phrase Participation Theatre.... Ive remembered it ever since. The year? 1980.
