Backpacks can contribute to back pain, neck pain and headaches. Take the following steps to make your child’s backpack healthier for their growing bodies: * Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and back. * Pack light. Organize using all of the compartments, and pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10-20% of your childs body weight. * Always encourage them to use both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can strain muscles. * If your school allows it, consider a rolling backpack. This type of backpack may be a good choice for students who must tote a heavy load. Remember, they still have to be carried up stairs, may be difficult to roll in snow and may not fit into some lockers.
