Bad mosquito season for NSW North Coast Friday January 16, 2015 - 09:41 EDT The North Coast Public Health Unit is warning of the significant risk of mosquito born viruses on the North Coast due to the current hot and humid conditions. The Unit Director Paul Corben said mosquito numbers are on the rise in the region and people need to try and avoid being bitten. He said a mosquito bite can pass on Ross River or Barmah Forest Virus and recent rainy, warm weather has created perfect breeding conditions. Were advising people to be on the lookout for mozzies and to protect themselves for being bitten, he said. Thats the only way of avoiding these viral illnesses. Mr Corben said last November and December more people than average were infected with the mosquito-born Ross River Virus. He said people should take precautions to try and avoid being bitten. The North Coast is a great place for mosquitoes to breed, he said. That means the risk of getting a mosquito born illness like Ross River Virus or Barmah Forest Virus is high for residents or visitors to the north coast. - ABC
