Bad new at council last night about the Emerald Ash Borer, an - TopicsExpress

Bad new at council last night about the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive species that is killing ash trees in Michigan and Southern Ontario. According to the Federal government it is no longer stoppable and they have moved to simply try to manage the situation. The City has a lot of ash trees along our streets and in our parks. The problem with the borer is when it is done killing the tree the tree is dry and weak and most come down right away or it is a danger. So the City is now faced with a new cost! Inoculate the trees at a cost of $100s a tree or wait for them to be killed and spend $100s a tree to remove them. Spend money we don’t have now to save our urban forest or wait and spend money we don’t have later to cut them down. We will have a report and a strategy in a couple of months. The bottom line is spend money now or spend it later.
