BadCatholic Marc Barnes discusses an article about artificial wombs, about outsourcing pregnancy. The author of that article suggests that pregnancy and childbirth lead to gender inequality at the work place. So //…if we want to achieve gender equality by changing attitudes, it can’t just be male attitudes that change. Men will have to become more interested in spending time with their children, but women will also have to become less interested. If the miracle of childbirth is a central component of what bonds women to their offspring, and pregnancy envy is a force that drives men to accumulate wealth, outsourcing pregnancy might be the best solution. (...) …The powerful, feeling-filled bond between a mother and her child is a big part of what leads working mothers to take their child-rearing responsibilities more seriously than working fathers. If this essential difference is the problem, if it is the root of gender equality in the workplace, and if our highest priority is to eliminate gender inequality, then ectogenesis offers a way forward.// Marc Barnes sarcastic reply to that is: //Of course, if the family simply serves the career, it’s a moot point. Who cares if we apply a destructive, false equality to the family if it serves the real, primary end of human existence — a job at Microsoft.// He thinks, that the genders are not becoming equal to each other, but to a third thing, which is the genderless economic unit. He adds: //There is an equality of persons, one which a Catholic would unhesitatingly call the equal dignity of all persons, but it is a paradoxical equality. It refers to the equal right of all persons to be treated as the persons they are — that is, unequally.// What do you think? What is equality? Should we sacrifice our differences, even our biology, to equality at the work place? Is our job the real, primary end of human existence? Can you imagine to use ectogenesis for the sake of your career? -Martina badcatholic.co/reflections-inside-artificial-womb/
