Bafana Bafana head coach, Ephraim Shakes Mashaba, and his protégé defender, Rivaldo Coetzee, were this morning nominated as contenders for the Coach of the Year & Newcomer of the Year awards respectively, in the 2014 SA Sport Awards. Mashaba has taken Bafana to a blistering start in their 2015 Afcon qualifying campaign, with the team now leading in Group A with seven points from three matches. Bafana will welcome the Red Devils of Congo at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane tonight for the second leg CAF Afcon qualifier, with a victory for Shakes side taking them one step closer to qualification for next years continental showpiece. Coetzee, on the other hand, has now become a Bafana record breaker after the 17-year-old became the national teams youngest ever player to don the Bafana jersey when he made his appearance in the recent 2-0 victory against Congo Brazzaville in Pointe Noire. The Ajax Cape Town defenders selection in the Bafana squad was met with mixed reactions considering his age, and especially when he was thrown in the deep- end against Congo away from home, but he absorbed the pressure very well, aiding the team to pick up maximum points. The young Urban Warriors man will also have another reason to put in an impressive performance for Bafana this evening, with the Kwaggafontein-born defender celebrating his birthday tomorrow, Thursday, October 16. Nominees: Coach of the Year: - Shakes Mashaba (Bafana Bafana) - Graham Hill (Swimming) - Neil Powell (Blitzbokke) Newcomer of the Year: - Rivaldo Coetzee (Ajax Cape Town & Bafana Bafana) - Wayde Van Niekerk (Athletics) - Gezelle Magermann (Athletics) The award ceremony will be staged on November 30.
