Bahadur Shah made peace with the rising Sikh movement but his reign lasted only four years (1707-1711) and the latter resumed guerilla war during Bulleh Shahs life. Apparently, Punjab was in turmoil due to Sikh incursions and frequent invasions of Ahmad Shah Abdali which made this verse popular: Khahda peeta lahe da te baqi Ahmad Shahe da (Consume as much as you can because the rest is going to be taken away by Ahmad Shah anyway). Bulleh Shah lamented the destruction of Punjab by saying that Bura haal hoia Punjab da... (Punjabs conditions have worsened). Bulleh Shah like him worked for unity of Punjab and condemned Ahmed Shah Abadli for killing innocent Sikhs, Hindus and even Punjabi Muslims, his army snatched food from Punjabi Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. Dama Dam Mast Qalandar Dama Dam Mast Qalandar is a spiritual song. It is a kalaam in Punjabi by Sufi Saint Baba Bulleh Shah, written a few centuries ago in honour of the most revered Sufi Saint of Sindh, Shahbaz Qalandar of Sehwan Sharif, near Larkana, Pakistan, who worked for Hindu-Muslim unity in Sindh. It was made widely popular by many Pakistani and Indian singers and composers like Noor Jahan, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen, Sabri Brothers, Wadali brothers, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Mika Singh, Reshman and mostly by Runa Laila a singer of Bangladesh. It is said that the kalaam/qawwali was adapted from the original prayer by Amir Khusrow and was then modified completely by Bulleh Shah. Apparently, Bulleh Shah gave an entirely different colour to the qawwali and added verses in praise of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. Bulleh Shahs version of the qawwali gives it a large tint of Sindhi culture.
