Bainimarama and Khaiyum have turned government transparency into a one-way mirror. The dictator can look through the mirror and see everything. The people of Fiji on the other hand see nothing but their own reflection. Since the military coup in 2006 the people have not been given any financial information about this regime. There is a budget but no one has ever seen an Auditor General’s Report to confirm the spending. Indeed the International Budget Partnership put Fiji at the bottom of a list of 94 countries with 0 out of 100. In their words “Fiji scored zero points out of 100 as it is virtually impossible for citizens to hold the government accountable for its management of the public’s money.” See the report here: internationalbudget.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/OBI2010-Fiji.pdf We have not had one announcement on salaries of Ministers. In the previous Governments, which Bainimarama claims were corrupt, politicians’ salaries were published. The whole country knows that Mahendra Chaudhry has over $3m in assets but no one knows what Bainimarama and Khaiyum have made, whilst they have been raping Fiji. Come on Khaiyum all you have to do is look at your last salary cheque and tell us. It is not hard. In April you told us we would know in June. It is now October!! Why the secrecy? Government owned institutions and corporations have stopped publishing their annual reports. We are just given some profit figure which for all we know could be completely imaginary. Whilst we are on the subject can the people of Fiji be told the true debt of FBC and why it is unable to pay its interest to the Fiji Development Bank. You cannot have free and fair elections unless the voters have real information. If the 2014 elections are to be anything other than a sham the one-way mirror must be broken now! Thanks too truthforfiji for the cartoon.
