Ball State Pennant - 1940s/50s. With an early non-threatening cardinal mascot. Ball State has not always been the Cardinals In the early days up to 1927, they were known as the Hoosieroons. I dont think there was a mascot...what in the heck would a Hoosieroon be anyway!? And the Cardinal mascot has changed over the years. The Cardinal became meaner looking. The early years...it was a pretty Cardinal - like the one pictured here on a 1950s pennnat. It was not until around the 1960s before we had the first Charlie Cardinal. And he was a sad looking one...(photo to come later compliments of the BSU Archives and Special Collections) In 1927 Ball State settled on Cardinal and that remains today. But what is funny are the other names the students had picked as choices (from the College Newspaper, The Easterner, on November 18, 1927) in addition to the Cardinals: Following is the complete list of names which the committee considered: Indians, Ball Players, Goblins, Steamers, Normals, Toreadors, Lindems, Sirens, Norsemen, Falcons, Normal, Panthers, Crimson Panthers, Flying Crimson, Fleet-foot Warriors, Conquerors, Magic City Conquerors, Speedsters, Dolphins, The Easterners, B. T.C. Braves, Muncie Gleaners, Magicians, Panthers, Cogs, Tigers, Comets, Normal Tigers, Fighting Normalites, Fighting Demons, Bawlers, Redmen, Magic City Warriors, Magic Scrappers, Gritters, Crimson Tigers, Fighting Tigers, Wondermen, Scrappin Teachers, Dynamos, Redskins, Sharks, Braves, Ball Bullets, Normal Scrappers, Magic City Scrappers, and Meteors. The winner of the new name was awarded a $5 gold piece. Back then that was worth $5, but still a lot of money. I am so glad the Cardinals was picked, but damn...wouldnt it be cool to be a BSU Fighting Demon or one of the Magic City Scrappers!!?
