Ballisodare United are Radisson Blu Sligo Cup Champions The Radisson Blu Sligo Cup Final reached its climax in front of a massive crowd at the Ray Mac Sharry Complex on Sunday afternoon with Ballisodare Utd and Strand Celtic doing battle to be the first club to lift this prestigious title. Ballisodare were first out of the blocks and Graham Lee was kept busy in the Strand goals however he could do little with the opener from a corner kick Shane O Donnell in attempting to clear his lines headed into his own net on thirty five minutes and three later they had a mountain to climb Darragh Healy headed home a brilliant goal. Despite the setback Strand Celtic rallied the troops with Fergal O Hara and Conor Gray pressing at every opportunity while Mark Mc Callion and Ryan Lynch worked hard up front but Ballisodare were very solid at the back Jason Farrell was superb in goal with Glen Mc Cormack and Damien Fallon well in control and up front Conor Davey and Mark Mc Goldrick were proving a handful. The second half was nip and tuck but Strand despite massive effort were getting no rewards and then on sixty eight minutes Mark Mc Goldrick fired home a killer strike high into the Strand net and it was all but over but five minutes from time super sub Kieran Brick rocketed home a devastating free kick to wrap up the Cup for a superb Ballisodare United. St John’s travelled the short distance to neighbours Merville United in this play off for survival in the Best Western Sligo Southern Hotel Super League a win and St John’s would be home and dry against Premier hopeful Merville United. However Merville forgot to read the script and they demolished St John’s with power and pace that was rewarded with a seven goal thumping. Ace Hit Man Simon Gilmartin bagged four aided and abetted by Malachy Spratt with a splendid hat trick while Conor Brennan pulled one back for a goal shocked St John’s who will now play their Football in the Premier Division while Merville United gain promotion to the Super League. In the Semi Final of the Sligo Glasshouse Champions Cup shocks abounded City United League Runners Up travelled to Boyle Celtic home of the current League Champions and what a turnaround Niall Mc Kenna giving City and one goal advantage at half time second half and the Silver Fox Gareth Kelly netted City’s second and on cue up stepped current international Keith Nibbs to rocket home goal number three and secure a Cup Final spot next Saturday night in the Ray Mac Sharry Complex. Ballygawley Celtic Division One Champions entertained Calry Bohs from the Super League in another brilliant encounter Owen Nicholson fired Calry Bohs into the lead and Kyle Carthy levelled matters for Ballygawley Celtic and despite the best efforts of both sides even after extra time they were inseparable. The dreaded penalty shoot out seen the majestic Niall Curneen in the Ballygawley Celtic goals take off to blinding saves that earned victory and a Final spot against City Utd in what was indeed a great display by both sides.
