Ban Ki-moon cited the human rights situation in Rakhine State – as “completely unacceptable,” and that Burma’s authorities had a duty to “ensure the safety and protection of all civilians in Myanmar, no matter what their religious or ethnic affiliation.” The UN Secretary General’s statement followed a report by the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Burma, who warned that events in Rakhine State could constitute crimes against humanity.
