Ban of Flupentixol-Melitracen combination worldwide The psychiatric combination drug Flupentixol-Melitracen has been banned in many countries worldwide, published in BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL (BMJ). In which countries it has been banned? Danish Medical Association banned Flupentixol-Melitracen combination in it’s country of origin, Denmark. It is also banned in US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Japan & Australia. Recently Indian health ministry has banned this combination.3 Why it has been banned? 1. Worldwide it is banned mainly due to lack of sufficient clinical trials & data to prove its safety & efficacy 2. It has side effects like nightmare, suicidal behavior etc. 3. Flupentixol shows frequent extrapyramidal effects like Akathisia (mental & motor restlessness), Dystonia (sustained muscle contraction), Parkinsonism symptoms1 4. Flupentixol is not recommended in states of excitement including mania1 Then what is the solution? 1. Resolving anxiety quickly with an anxiolytic (Bromazepam) should be the first choice of treatment in patients with anxiety and depression.2 2. Anti-depressant (SSRI) combined with an anxiolytic (Bromazepam) can be very effective treatment in severe Mixed Anxiety Depression Disorder (MADD).2 Reference: 1.
