Banbury United 0 Arlesey Town 2 - Match Report United fail to sparkle as Arlesey take all three points It was an uneventful opening to the game but on 15 minutes Arlesey would take the lead when a defensive mistake put Mark Gallagher through on goal down the middle and though Leigh Bedwell advancing out of his goal did well to save the shot from just inside the penalty area, the loose ball rolled towards goal where the following in Matt Taylor provided the finishing touch from two yards into the empty net. There were few opportunities for either side as the half continued but in the 26th minute a cross from the right by Banbury captain Luke Cray saw Shepherd Murombedzi with his back to goal do an overhead bicycle kick which was deflected just wide by a defender. Arlesey’s Gallagher should have done better in the 38th minute when Leigh Bedwell slipped attempting to clear the ball from outside the area presenting the ball to the striker but his shot from 30 yards with the custodian out of his goal went well over the bar. Two minutes before the interval a cross from the right by Jacob Walcott led to a six yard snap-shot by Josh Shama from a narrow angle at the near post which Nick Thompson did well to tip around the post for a corner. This was the nearest United came to scoring in the first half and the only time that the visiting custodian had been seriously tested. The second half continued in similar vein to the first with United looking unlikely to find a way through a well organised and drilled visiting defence. On 57 minutes a right wing cross from Walcott saw Leam Howards get his head to the ball first at the six yard box but under severe pressure from former Puritan James Sage he was only able to put the ball over the bar. Arlesey did though have a couple of decent chances to increase their lead just after the hour mark. In the 61st minute a corner from the right eventually fell to Dean Mason but his shot from just five yards was blasted well over the bar. A minute later James Hatch set up Mason but the shot from the edge of the area went high once more. With United never looking like scoring as the half developed Arlesey seemed content with their 1-0 lead but they would double this five minutes from time in rather fortunate circumstances when a clearance from the edge of the penalty area by Callum White hit Taylor and rebounded back at pace into the corner of the Banbury net past a bemused Bedwell. After the performance at Dunstable on Tuesday night this was a disappointment. Going forward United lacked the fluency they had shown just four days earlier and it was an easy afternoon for Nick Thompson in the Arlesey goal. Overall it was a poor game and poor entertainment but Arlesey will not be concerned about that it was a vital three points gained and from their perspective job done.
