Band I was given: This Heat (by Albion Lawrence, that cheeky devil) Have I heard of them: Oh yes. Do I like them: They are an old favorite- solid avant-garde on rock instruments. Charles Hayward (drummer/singer) was never in a band I didnt like. This Heat sound to me like a continuation of the krautrock-influenced proto-mathrock that Quiet Sun were so good at (his previous band with Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music.) But the cool thing about This Heat is that they fit perfectly between prog and post-punk like no one else. This sort of thing was in the air in the early 80s and in NYC people like Giorgio Gomelski seemed to have a finger on the pulse. John Peel was fond of This Heat also (not surprising since his favorite band was The Fall). They had a sort of idiot savant freshness- an ability to dive into a groove without reflection, keeping it sounding new and sharp. The only bad thing about them was the guerilla recording. To hear this material recorded well would be a wonderful thing. Favorite Song: Ill go with Horizontal Hold, although all of Deceit is excellent. https://youtube/watch?v=Lj4vNLkr2Kc
