Did you know... -At 1383 metres above sea level, Banff is the town with the greatest elevation in Canada -Banff was established in 1885 as the first national park in Canada, and only the third in the entire world. -Banff National Park has over 1600 kilometres of hiking trails -Banff is a UNESCO Heritage Site -The name “Banff” is derived from Banffshire, Scotland, the birthplace of two of the original directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway -Since 1996, at least 4 million people have visited Banff each year -The Banff Springs Hotel opened in 1888 as a popular resort destination for wealthy Brits taking the train across Canada -There are 53 species of mammals that live in Banff National Park, including Grizzly bears, blacks bears, lynx, cougars, wolverines, elk, and big horn sheep -At least 280 species of birds can be found in Banff including many predatory species such as bald and golden eagles, red-tailed hawk, osprey, and merlin. You will have plenty to look out for when visiting Banff. -There are more grizzly bears than black bears in Banff National Park, but you are more likely to encounter black bears as they prefer to inhabit lower areas closer to roads. Grizzly bears prefer the back country -Due to the harsh winters, the park has few reptiles and amphibians with only one species of toad, three species of frog, one salamander species and two species of snakes that have been identified. -Evidence shows that people have lived in the area that is now Banff for at least 10,000 years -The first European to see the Rocky Mountains, Anthony Henday, did so in 1754 These are some of the facts weve discovered.
