Bang Bang movie review: Director: Siddharth Anand Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Danny Denzongpa and Pawan Malhotra Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz met on an airplane, crashed it into the ground and set off a blistering chase. That was Knight And Day. Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif meet at a restaurant in Shimla, the dance and then there’s a chase. That’s the kick start of Bang Bang. Seems like a certified downgrade. Considering, Knight And Day wasn’t no Bonnie And Clyde, stepping down from that is pretty low. Truth is Siddharth Anand’s slick spy thriller is all gloss and no substance. The adaptation, the changes, the so-called tweaking of the original screenplay / story just doesn’t work. The story starts off with an international terrorist named Omar Zafar (Danny Denzongpa) and his treachery. No sooner Hrithik Roshan is introduced amongst thunder and lightning as the man who stole the Kohinoor diamond from London, only it doesn’t look like it’s the authentic English capital. It looks more like South Bombay masquerading as Knightsbridge. Nonetheless, Hrithik is running around Shimla giving the goons a slip when he catches hold of the stunning Katrina Kaif sitting alone at a restaurant. He decides to walk in, she mistakes him for a blind date and that’s the start of their Knight And Day romance. When you do reach the rather predictable finale, you realize Hrithik’s character puts Katrina’s character at all the risks in the world, just because he catches a fleeting glimpse of her beauty. Not very responsible behavior by a hero. Sadly, Bang Bang! is riddled with many such logical wormholes. And keep eating away into the story. By the end you’re left with an apology of a climax. What’s sadder than the sorry story is that Hrithik Roshan is condemned to be better than the movies he acts in. Not just his smashing looks but even his character reminds of the unforgettable days of Dhoom 2. Here’s a man who looks like a dream, dances like a dream and aces action like he’s the last action hero, but he’s doing all that in the middle of an embarrassingly shoddy narrative. It’s just unbelievable. And let’s not even talk about the gross injustice to Katrina Kaif. Calling her ‘jaw-droppingly beautiful’ would be an understatement. She’s definetly more beautiful than the exotic locales Bang Bang! was shot in. But that’s about it. Her character lets her down and how. What Hrithik and Katrina can do together has been seen in all its magical glory in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. And what they’re made to do in Bang Bang! simply said, pales in comparison. And is a definite let down for expectations. Not that Bang Bang! isn’t well-made. Its technical craft is top notch. The cinematography, the action choreography and even production values are all Hollywood level. But the direction is near abysmal. The director needs a crash course in the grammar of filmmaking. Why are you wasting crores of rupees on triteness? You only had to emulate, heck simulate the original and you’d have had a winner. It was easier than retweeting Katy Perry. Instead you’ve allowed yourself to make rookie mistakes like inserting conch blow and Indian drum sounds in scenes of dramatic importance. What is this? The costliest Indian soap opera homage ever? Bad execution aside, if you’re going to watch Bang Bang! do so with an open mind. And watch it for the most beautiful couple in b-town Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. The heavenly panoramas of Himachal Pradesh pale in comparison. That alone should be worth the price of an admission ticket. I can I say that I was expecting more from this movie, but with good action sequences and great music, that makes Bang Bang bearable. Im gonna go with a 7/10 for this hollywood remake.
