Bangalore: South India houses nearly half of the country’s medical colleges; around 41percent of the colleges are from the four southern states. According to a recent statement released in the Lok Sabha by Gulam Nabi Azad, states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh have the most number of medical institutions, reports TNN. India has a total of 387 medical colleges, out of which 159 colleges are located in these four southern states. This list includes both government and private medical institutions. India is renowned globally for producing the highest number of doctors each year. With this sort of competition within the country, every state battles to produce maximum doctors. Karnataka produces a good number of medical graduates in the country, a staggering 6,755 students and this is followed by the neighboring state Andhra Pradesh with 6,350 students. Karnataka has a total number of 34 private medical colleges, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 28 and Tamil Nadu with 28 institutions. But the state of Tamil Nadu tops the list with 21 government run medical colleges. Off late there has been a debate over the medical system in the country, as the style of education for these medical courses are unchanged from the past 40 years. “The system of medical education in the country is still what it was when I was a medical student 40 years ago. There have been many changes in the way medical students are trained in the west. In order to produce quality doctors, the system should change," said Devi Shetty founder of Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore. Many states in the country do not offer post graduation medical seats, Karnataka again tops this list as around 3,286 students graduate every year. The other two states which are placed second and third are Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. It is said, the government is coming up with new strategies to increase the number of colleges for post graduate studies in India. "Financial assistance has been granted to 72 state government’s medical colleges under a scheme for strengthening and upgrading state government medical colleges for starting new PG course or increasing PG seats," said Azad to TNN. The three southern states apart from Kerala is growing rapidly, as new colleges are being approved in large numbers and also there is increase in the number of medical undergraduate seats.
