Bangladesh may miss out on Thai job offer Rabiul Islam; Private recruiters say 50,000 denied fishing job due to wrong policy The government’s proposal to send labour to Thailand under a joint arrangement resulted in a missed overseas employment opportunity for 50,000 Bangladeshi fishermen, the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) has claimed. Wishing not to be named, a director of BMET told that the Thai government was interested in recruiting the fishermen from Bangladesh through private recruiting agencies. The Bangladesh government, however, wanted the labour migration agreed under a government-to-government arrangement, he said. Delegations from the government and private recruiting agents had visited Thailand to explore labour migration possibilities. “Under the instruction of expatriates’ welfare minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, I met the trade bodies in Thailand who offered to recruit fishermen,” said Secretary General of Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) Ali Haidar Chowdhury. Haider claimed the Thai government had lost interest in the proposal when the Bangladeshi delegation suggested workers be sent under a government-to-government deal. Expatriates’ welfare and overseas ministry joint secretary Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal said: “We have prepared a draft Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) for expediting labour migration to Thailand which would be signed soon.” “We have not taken any decision whether it would be under the g-to-g system or private arrangement,” he added.
