Bar Council of India demands a role in appointment of SC, HC judges CHENNAI: The statutory Bar Council of India (BCI) has demanded a key role for the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in the selection and appointment of judges for the apex court, and a recognized high court bar association in the selection of judges for high courts. At its extraordinary meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, the BCI also sought a role for the BCI or its nominee in the selection of judges for the Supreme Court, and a nomination for the respective state bar council in case of the appointment of judges for high courts, said a press release from the BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra and co-chairman S Prabakaran. Opposing the proposed constitutional amendment bill to bring about the Judicial Appointments Commission to replace the collegium system for appointment of judges for the higher judiciary, the BCI said a five-member body headed by the prime minister or his nominee or the union law minister should formed in respect of the Supreme Court, while another five-member body headed by the chief minister concerned or his nominee or law minister of a state should be constituted to select and appoint judges for the high court.
