Bar Group Says Event Company Wont Pay Up By Cheryl Miller Contact All Articles The Recorder November 7, 2013 No business wants to get crosswise with a group of attorneys. But thats exactly where Acteva Inc., a San Francisco event and fundraising management company, finds itself. The California Association of Black Lawyers this week filed suit in San Francisco Superior Court against Acteva, alleging that the company and its chief executive, Pankaj Gupta, owes the organization $26,883 in proceeds from events and membership signups. CABL president Kimberlei Evans said that her group had used the online event manager without incident since 2009; Acteva would collect members payments and, after taking a cut to cover its costs, pass along the money to the 6,000-member organization. But in February Acteva stopped forwarding CABL the funds it was owed even after lawyers paid more than $1,666 in fees, the suit alleges. Evans said attempts to recover the money through Acteva and Gupta have been unsuccessful. We are open to trying to resolve the issue even though we filed the complaint, she said. Gupta did not return a message left at his Acteva office Thursday. Acteva and Gupta have already drawn the public ire of other clients—many of them nonprofits—who also say they havent been properly paid. Theyve created a website called Acteva Sucks to publicize their stories as well as their encounters with Gupta. In an email, Gupta told a San Diego television station that the negative social media onslaught is basically killing the business and the brand. He said the company was doing our best to make the organizations whole, despite the departure of key executives and team members. Evans said $26,883 is a large portion of CABLs operating budget and its loss has forced the organizations leaders to curtail travel around the state. CABL, represented by the Ribera Law Firm of San Francisco, is seeking $26,883 from Acteva as well as interest, costs and attorney fees.
