Barack Obama praises George Bush Sr Barack Obama paid a warm tribute to George Bush Sr at a White House event celebrating volunteering. By AFP 9:53PM BST 15 Jul 2013 Comments2 Comments Mr Bush, the 41st president, established the Daily Point of Light Award in 1989 to mark the work of individuals who volunteer. Mondays ceremony marked the 5,000th time the award was given since it was created. How your love of service has kindled a similar love in the hearts of others, Mr Obama said at the ceremony saluting the work of the non-profit Points of Light organisation. Mr Obama said Mr Bushs commitment and support to volunteer service had helped create a kinder, gentler nation – echoing the former presidents famous slogan. Frankly, just the fact that youre such a gentleman and such a good and kind person, I think, helps to reinforce that spirit of service, Mr Obama said. We are surely a kinder and gentler nation because of you. And we cant thank you enough, Mr Obama added, before applauding the 89-year-old Mr Bush. He thanked Barack and Michelle Obama for wonderful hospitality. Mr Bush is the oldest of the four living former Presidents. He lost his bid for a second term in 1992 when he was beaten by Bill Clinton. His son George W Bush, Mr Obamas immediate predecessor, was not present at Mondays White House ceremony.
