Barakah is such an essential item, such an essential concept for us to understand, and such an essential concept for us to tap into, because it is our key to a truly productive life. What is barakah? Scholars have defined it as, “Barakah is the attachment of Divine goodness to a thing,” which means that Allah Subhanahu wa-Ta’ala (Glorified and Exalted be He) attaches goodness to that thing. Could be time, money, sleep, wealth, family, children, whatever it is Allah Subhanahu wa-Ta’ala (Glorified and Exalted be He) attaches Divine goodness to it. And if it occurs in something little, it increases it. How many times have you heard stories of people who have little money but they are living sufficiently, or have a small house but they’re very happy, or they have very few children but they’re very happy with their children. So if it occurs in something little, it increases it. And if it occurs in something much, it benefits it. So imagine if someone is very wealthy but has barakah in his money then you will find that this person is able to be more productive with his money, is able to do so much khair (goodness) with his money, so much goodness with his money. It means that this person has barakah in his wealth. So it’s very very important – this concept of barakah, for us to try our best, to find and attach this Divine goodness to the things around us, whether it is our time, whether it is our money, whether it is our family, whether it is our children, our work, our cars, whatever it is we try our best to make sure that these things have barakah in them, so that we can be truly, spiritually productive.
