Barangay Ginebra San Miguel poured in 34 points in the second quarter en route to defeating GlobalPort Batang Pier, 95-78, on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City. Japeth Aguilar led the Ginebra starters with 19 points, seven boards and six block shots. Mac Baracael added 12, while the rest of the five in Joseph Yeo, LA Tenorio and Billy Mamaril had nine each. Mark Caguioa and Greg Slaughter added 15 and 11 off the bench, respectively. I like the way my guys are playing. We learned a lot so far. Were still trying to improve, said Ginebra coach Jeff Cariaso. GlobalPort surprised the crowd favorites with a 23-15 blast in the opening period, but Japeth Aguilar led the counter-charge in the second. Ginebra also limited Batang Pier to just 12 points before the halftime break to enjoy a 49-35 lead. In the second half, GlobalPort struggled to mount a comeback, as Ginebra edged them in the third, 25-23, and in the payoff period, 21-20. Stanley Pringle led the Batang Pier with 26 points, while Terrence Romeo added 21. Keith Jensen was left scoreless, while the frountcourt duo of Nonoy Baclao and Mark Isip only managed to produce nine points combined. GlobalPort also didnt get a lot from their bench. Only three other players scored, led by Sol Mercado with nine. Ronjay Buenafe had eight, while Kelly Nabong had five. Cariaso had high praises for GlobalPort, highlighting its roster change as part of why they might have struggled: I think theyre a diffrent team without [Alex] Cabagnot, Cariaso said. One day to prepare or to lose a main guy like Alex will be hard, but still its a very tough young team. So much talent on that team once they improve their chemistry. With the win, Ginebra now sets up a duel with Talk N Text, who earlier blew out Barako. Talk n Text is very good in terms of understanding what they do; theyre very experienced, added Cariaso of their next foe. This team, their core, has been together for a long time. Hopefully it comes down to the last two minutes. — Renee Fopalan/JST, GMA News The scores: GINEBRA 95 - Aguilar 19, Caguioa 15, Baracael 12, Slaughter 11, Mamaril 9, Tenorio 9, Yeo 9, Reyes 6, Monfort 3, Ellis 2, Forrester 0, Helterbrand 0, Brondial 0.
