Barbara Jewers was my friend. And I miss her. On the day this past week that wouldve been her 24th anniversary at Syncrude, an article was published by an online news agency, the Vancouver Observer. In the article, Dr John OConnor (who was absolutely marvelous to Barb during her short time from diagnosis to passing), infers very strongly (without any proof - his own words) that Barbs cancer was a result of living in Ft McMurray and working in the oilsands. An opinion apparently also shared by Barbs long-estranged spouse, also interviewed for the story. I wont repost the article, which has angered many - given the volume of feedback Ive received. First, there are several inaccuracies and misrepresentations in it, which frustrate me as a work colleague, and more so as a friend. But secondly, when Barbs brother Allen Jewers representing Barbs family, commented on the story - saying Barbs life was something to be celebrated, and her death was, not a soap box to advance someones personal agenda, - his comment was subsequently deleted - censored - by the Observer. As were several other comments from at least six close friends who felt the same. Deleted, the Observer said, Because they were, personal attacks. The article itself - as one friend said - is a personal attack on Barbs life and legacy, and her work, for which she was very passionate. The Observer can choose to silence the voice of Barbs family and friends on Observer managed venues. This isnt one of those. The family (and friends) of Barb Jewers do not support the assertions made in the article, or the use of Barbs passing in any manner that detracts from all Barb did and was, in this community and at her work; and something Barb herself would surely not have supported. We dont know why this happened to Barb. Shes gone; we miss her everyday. But we will never cease to defend her legacy in a manner and with a voice, that neither the Vancouver Observer, nor anyone else, can censor.
